An Inspiring Mission to Fight Vasculitis and Honor the Legacy of Harold Ramis
In 2015, our lives took an unexpected turn when my best friend was diagnosed with a rare and debilitating disease called vasculitis. The journey was not easy, as it took almost a year for her to receive an accurate diagnosis. It was during this time that we discovered the tragic passing of Harold Ramis, the beloved actor, comedian, writer, and director who portrayed Dr. Egon Spengler in the iconic movie "Ghostbusters" (1984).
Little did we know that Harold Ramis had succumbed to complications from the same disease just a year earlier in 2014.
Motivated by our friend's struggle and the untimely loss of Harold Ramis, we knew we had to take action. With a passion for the Ghostbusters franchise, I decided to channel our love for the movies into a meaningful cause. Thus, the Lakeland Ghostbusters were born—a local team dedicated to raising awareness and fundraising for vasculitis research through the Vasculitis Foundation.
Building a Team of Ghostbusters
Our journey began with a single Proton pack that I had built for conventions. Little did I know that this prop would become the catalyst for a much larger mission. Determined to make a difference, I assembled a team of like-minded individuals who shared our enthusiasm for Ghostbusters and the desire to make a positive impact. Together, we set out to raise awareness about vasculitis and support the Vasculitis Foundation in its research efforts.
Raising Awareness, One Event at a Time
Since our inception, the Lakeland Ghostbusters have made a significant impact in our community. By attending local events such as conventions, charity walks, and fundraisers, we have been able to reach a diverse audience and raise awareness about vasculitis.
Armed with our modified gear, we took to the streets, attending various events and gatherings to spread awareness about vasculitis. We distributed hundreds of bracelets and brochures provided by the Vasculitis Foundation, ensuring that individuals had access to essential information about the disease.
Through these efforts, we aimed to empower others to recognize the symptoms of vasculitis and seek prompt medical attention, potentially saving lives and improving outcomes.

What began as a response to a personal struggle has evolved into a movement dedicated to raising awareness and funds for vasculitis research.
